About the role

The Legal Counsel – Real Estate will be accountable for providing legal advice on real estate matters across the Ocado Group, both in the UK and internationally. In this role you will be expected to be autonomous and collaborative, proactive and work at pace in order to meet the continued requirements for growth of the business.

Please note: this is a 12-month fixed term contract due to maternity leave.

What you’ll do:

  • Drafting and negotiating leases, agreements for lease, sale agreements, transfers and surrenders;

  • Reviewing responses to commercial property standard enquiries and raise appropriate further queries;

  • Reviewing official copy entries and plans along with associated deeds and documents and perform due diligence on properties including the raising of searches and reviewing search results;

  • Overseeing post-completion matters such as SDLT returns and Land Registry applications;

  • Completing requests for information from, and making submissions to, Local Authorities and the Valuation Office;

  • Reviewing and negotiating licences for alterations, wayleaves and other property management documents;

  • Assisting with rent reviews;

  • Dealing with landlord and tenant issues and liaising with landlords;

  • Reviewing and negotiating heads of terms for new property acquisitions;

  • Supporting the acquisition of property in foreign jurisdictions and managing foreign property lawyers working on these projects;

  • Assisting funders to acquire security over properties;

  • Responding to queries from colleagues and assisting them with their real estate/planning-related issues.

  • Producing and assisting in giving training to colleagues;

  • Assisting with the property aspects of construction and engineering transactions;

  • Identifying and managing legal risks within property contracts;

  • Identifying and implementing good practice and creating template documents; and

  • Keeping up to date with new legislation and case law and sharing that knowledge with colleagues

About you

  • You will have 3 to 5 years’ post qualification experience as a solicitor or barrister with specialism in Commercial Property working in private practice with a desire to move in house, or maybe you already have in house experience and are looking for your next move.

  • Ideally you will have experience supporting and working collaboratively with construction lawyers as part of their transactions.

  • We would love to see experience of working with organisations in the technology and engineering sectors but this is not a show stopper!

  • Familiarity with planning law and the ability to spot planning issues in order to understand when they need referral for specialist planning advice would be beneficial.

  • Experience working with foreign property lawyers on international projects would be highly beneficial.
