Due to growth, we have an exciting new opportunity for a driven, autonomous Back End Software Engineer to be a vital cog in a growing team, based in our development centre in Welwyn Garden City (Hybrid).

You will be joining an exciting department who are responsible for the design, development and productionisation of Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems for which Ocado is a recognised leader in the grocery marketplace.

The role is for a Software Engineer (all experience levels considered) to be involved in all aspects of software development, with an emphasis on writing robust, effective code, and developing, maintaining, deploying and supporting high-quality software systems.

  • Contribute towards technical decisions in your team.

  • Help set standards and ways of working in your team.

  • Support your team to deliver, contributing effectively to team continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to technical discovery, sharing constructive ideas and critique.

  • Participate in design activities and capture learning effectively.

  • Participate in the full product delivery lifecycle.

  • Collaborate with and review the work of others within your team.

  • Familiarise yourself with the team’s domain and ways of working to adhere to and improve your team’s quality standards.

  • Research and recommend industry practices that could benefit your team’s delivery.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience in OO languages (C#, Python)

  • Experience of Java 8+

  • Passionate about developing high-quality enterprise software

  • Comfortable working with a large number of developers spread across multiple groups

  • Happy to take an active role in supporting the business needs

  • Experience working in an Agile continuous delivery environment

  • Experience working with large applications, with a sizable codebase

  • Experience working with soft real-time systems

  • Degree educated in Computer Science or related subject like Mathematics or Physics (or an equivalent experience)

  • Understanding of functional programming

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring
