What does the team do

As part of our Advanced Technology division, our talented robotics research engineers are working on sensor-guided robotic systems to further improve the efficiency of our operation. Our primary goal is to find the best way to deploy robots in the production of grocery orders. In order to do this, we pursue cutting-edge research into state of the art algorithms, sensing technologies, and manipulation techniques.

To give you an idea of the types of projects you might work on, here’s some examples of previous successes. As part of our effort to be in the vanguard of robotics research, the team has been involved in two European Union funded Horizon 2020 research projects with a number of leading European Universities:-

What would I be doing?

Leading a top team of highly skilled software professionals in the area of computer vision and machine learning. Continuously transform and grow Ocado Advanced Technology offering with new vision products and capabilities in the space of product recognition and process optimizations using software and hardware vision systems.

You will:

  • Grow and lead the Inventory recognition team by designing and implementing efficient and effective management practices within the team and in collaboration with multiple Advanced Technology teams in several locations.

  • Actively architect and implement end-to-end cutting edge vision software solutions by combining conventional methods and AI-driven approaches.

  • Continuously provide guidelines and mentorship to team members both in the technical and process areas.

  • Foster impeccable code quality and code delivery processes including overseeing all aspects of product design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance phases.

  • Drive knowledge-sharing initiatives within the team and across teams to create a positive, and productive environment.

  • Partner with the product teams to identify and deliver the next generation of disruptive products in the product recognition area.

  • Work closely with researchers to architect, implement, test, deploy and support new computer vision algorithms and turn them into working increments for the Ocado Smart Platform.

  • Discover, evaluate and implement new tools and practices to increase the effectiveness of the team.

What we are looking for

  • Strong previous experience in leading and growing research and development-driven teams.

  • Be able to look forward, plan ahead and track execution leveraging waterfall and agile methodologies where appropriate.

  • Craftsmanship in designing and communicating the technical and organizational strategy so the team can act quickly and autonomously in alignment with goals.

  • Extensive experience in developing production software at scale in Python and C++.

  • Hands-on deep expertise designing, training, and deploying computer vision ML models as well as ETL processes and tools.

  • Experience in designing and developing data pipelines for online and offline ML models.

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: architecture, design patterns, testing.

  • Substantial experience of CI/CD e.g. GitLab, Docker, or similar.

  • Focus on code quality both in own work and that of the wider team.

  • Demonstrable experience in releasing and maintaining code in production.

  • Practical experience of cloud systems e.g. GCP or AWS.

  • Excellent understanding of troubleshooting process and tools.

This would make you stand out from the crowd

  • Masters/PhD in computer vision, ML or robotics

  • SCRUM master certification

  • Experience working with point clouds

  • Experience with Big Data

  • Experience in leveraging AWS cloud infrastructure for running production ML services

  • Experience with vision hardware – cameras and sensors

  • Experience in robotics or a similar domain involving hardware, sensors .etc

  • Go software development skills
