Job Description:

We’re looking for someone to join our small, closely-knit and passionate garden team. You’ll help us care for this 200-acre living work of art, working collaboratively with the team our volunteers and other departments. You’ll help showcase Stourhead to over 400,000 visitors per year using a diverse range of horticultural knowledge and practices.

Job Responsibilities:

  • As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You’ll be passionate and enthused and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden.
  • This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You’ll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding.
  • You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants.
  • You’ll be helping to cut the hedges and mow our fine lawns.
  • You’ll also take ownership of specific areas of the garden ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy.
  • Many horticulture techniques will be taught and refined during your time at Stourhead to build on your previous skills.

Job Requirements:

  • Competence with machinery/equipment use and maintenance; including tractors, chainsaws, and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance.
  • You have a thirst for knowledge and are eager to share your work with pride with our visitors, volunteers and other departments.
  • You’ll need to be confident in leading small teams of volunteers, along with helping teach and develop our assistant gardeners with your proven skills.
  • We’re looking for someone with previous experience in horticulture, proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants.
  • RHS level 2 in horticulture or equivalent.
  • You need to be able to carry out physically demanding work daily, being competent in machinery such as mowers and hedge-cutters and have the stamina to work to your highest ability throughout the day.
  • You’re confident in making your own decisions to get things done both efficiently and creatively, whilst respecting multiple points of view of our work.
